Helium Mobile Carrier Offload Program FAQ
Helium Mobile Carrier Offload Program FAQ
Updated over a week ago

1. What is the Helium Mobile Carrier Offload Program?

The Helium Mobile Carrier Offload Program enables mobile carriers, like Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) and Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs), to use the Helium Network's coverage to offload mobile data traffic generated by their own subscribers' devices. Offloading data to Helium’s carrier-grade network allows MNOs and MVNOs to enhance service quality and improve their users’ overall experience while optimizing costs.

2. Who can join the Carrier Offload Program as a mobile carrier?

Any mobile carrier interested in optimizing network operations and providing a superior user experience can join the Helium Mobile Carrier Offload Program. The program is designed to be flexible and scalable, accommodating carriers of all sizes and with diverse requirements. Contact the Nova Labs team at [email protected] to discuss the integration path.

3. Who are the carriers currently participating in the carrier offload program?

Numerous leading carriers are already actively participating in the Helium Mobile Carrier Offload Program. In January 2024, Nova Labs and Telefonica announced a partnership to trial Helium carrier offload in Mexico. Several US-based MNOs have recently joined the program and are offloading terabytes of subscriber data daily into the Helium Mobile Network.

4. How do subscribers of a Helium Mobile Carrier Offload partner connect to the Helium Network?

The process is seamless and automatic for the carrier’s subscribers. When their subscriber's device enters an area with Helium Network coverage, it will seamlessly and securely switch to the Helium Network to offload data traffic. This roaming happens in the background without disrupting the subscriber's experience or requiring any direct interaction from the subscriber. The technology that makes this seamless roaming possible is called Passpoint/Hotspot 2.0. Passpoint automatically and securely authenticates subscribers into the network using the credentials stored inside their SIM cards or an over-the-top delivered TLS certificate assigned to a specific subscriber.

5. How do Hotspot operators earn rewards when carriers offload data through their Hotspots?

Hotspot owners provide the necessary coverage for carriers to offload mobile data onto the Helium Network. Mobile carriers can optimize for parameters like Hotspot type and location.

Key Benefits for Mobile Carriers

  • Improved Coverage: Expand network reach and capacity, especially in areas with limited traditional coverage.

  • Enhanced User Experience: Provide subscribers with seamless connectivity and faster data speeds for supporting high-quality definition video streaming and gaming.

  • Cost Optimization: Reduce capital expenditures on network infrastructure.
