How does HIP-147 affect me as a deployer?

Updated over a week ago

What is HIP-147?

HIP-147, introduced in September 2025, restructured how HNT emissions are distributed within the Helium Mobile Network.

Previously, under HIP-53, 20% of the total Mobile emissions were reserved for Proof-of-Coverage (PoC) rewards, while Data Transfer rewards were drawn pro-rata from a 40% allocation. Any unused Data Transfer emissions were then redirected to PoC rewards.

HIP-147 removes the fixed 20% PoC reservation entirely. Now, up to 60% of Mobile emissions are used to reward Data Transfer first. Only the remaining HNT, if any, is then distributed for PoC rewards.

How does HIP-147 affect me as a deployer?

With HIP-147 in effect, Data Transfer rewards take priority over Proof-of-Coverage rewards. This means:

  • On high data offload days, a larger portion (or even all) of emissions will go toward Data Transfer rewards, leaving fewer PoC rewards.

  • On low data offload days, there may be more leftover emissions available for PoC rewards.

  • In rare cases of extremely high network data usage, no PoC rewards may be distributed for that period.

What’s the key takeaway?

HIP-147 aligns rewards more closely with real network utility. Hotspots that actively transfer data are prioritized and rewarded first, while Proof-of-Coverage rewards now depend on what remains after Data Transfer allocations are fulfilled.
